Corum race record intact

From Sail-World.com:

Thursday was beat the clock day in Del Rey Yacht Club's 18th biennial Corum International Yacht Race, and Scout Spirit in PHRF-AA and overall, Beau Geste in PHRF-A and Chicken Little in PHRF-B were the winners.

It still remained to calculate the corrected handicap time to see who would collect the hardware, including a Corum Admiral's Cup Trophy 41 watch - retail value $2,195 - for the overall winner of each class at the awards presentation Saturday.

The top prize for first overall will go to the Newport Sea Base's 78-foot turbo sled, Scout Spirit, which finished at dawn Thursday well within the 18¾ hours owed it by Magnitude 80, whose elapsed time was 5 days 6 hours 59 minutes 56 seconds...

...It makes it doubtful whether even Randall Pittman's Dubois 90, Genuine Risk, if its owner hadn't injured a foot and sent the boat sail testing instead, or Roy Disney's maxZ86, Pyewacket, if its topmast hadn't cracked off Cabo San Lucas, could have done it.

...Bay Wolf finished well in front, but navigator Richard Parlette's eyes were on his watch as he stood at the dock in the early morning glow. Then the word came over the radio: Chicken Little had just finished less than an hour behind to correct out by 3 minutes 38 seconds.

‘That hurts,’ Parlette said. ‘It was a tiring race - so much slatting around. We had five sails on the foredeck in the last two miles and never stopped making sail changes.

'In the first two days the wind went 360 in two full loops. We jibed outside of Cabo and stayed outside while they went inside. Next thing we were 20 miles ahead.’

The sailing is beautiful in Cabo (and perfect in December and January!). If you are not sailing, it is wonderful to watch them!

Another Great Experience In Cabo!

From blombergs r us:

Our one big vacation of the year was a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in May. It was Marti’s birthday present. Don’t I give great gifts? Well, now that I have her hooked I bet she won’t be getting that type of present every year. Cabo was awesome. We highly recommend it. We got lot’s of sun, ate great food and drank some yummy drinks. Some other highlights were going fishing out in the ocean, shopping, and betting on the N.B.A. playoff games every night while taking in some of the nightly entertainment! The best thing about the whole trip though was how well we got along. On the way home on the plane I remember thinking to myself, “ I can actually picture myself marrying this girl.”

Cabo. Of course!

Puerto Vallarta Race

From The International Sailing Federation:

Because Chicken Little is a heavier boat, Bay Wolf owed it three seconds per mile or 56 minutes 15 seconds for the race. Bay Wolf finished well in front, but navigator Richard Parlette's eyes were on his watch as he stood at the dock in the early morning glow. Then the word came over the radio: Chicken Little had just finished less than an hour behind to correct out by 3 minutes 38 seconds.

'That hurts,' Parlette said. 'It was a tiring race . . . so much slatting around. We had five sails on the foredeck in the last two miles and never stopped making sail changes. In the first two days the wind went 360 in two full loops. We jibed outside of Cabo and stayed outside while they went inside. Next thing we were 20 miles ahead.'

Cabo, Then Babies

From The Bell Family Update:

This is a neat story.

Well the day has finally arrived and after all of the waiting it is happening faster than we could have ever imagined. We got a call yesterday afternoon that there are a set of 4 month old twins (boy and a girl) and a 3 year old boy (all siblings) that need to be adopted. We went and met with them today and are movong ahead to the next step of the adoption process.

We are very excited and overwhelmed by the thought of becoming parents overnight (well sort of ... our journey has been 9 months long now). We need to keep reminding ourselves to breath!!

We leave for Cabo San Lucas on business in the morning and we will be back on Friday and Saturday the children arrive at our home!! WOW!! A stork is bringing us our babies!!

It touches us because we adopted our children. We are happy for the Bell family!

Jason Kidd: Tanned And Relaxed In Cabo

From NJ.com:

Jason Kidd was at yesterday's shootaround after missing practice Monday when, due to the snow storm, he returned late from his All-Star break vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico -- and the point guard looked tanned and relaxed. But he wasn't so relaxed that he felt ready to play 48 minutes a night for the remainder of the season.

Knee surgery is keeping him off the court. But it sounds like Cabo did him some good.!

The Race Continues

From Yachting Universe, Corum International Yacht Race Day 5:

Greg Daley, skipper of the escort vessel Chaos, said, "It was so cool to see these boats neck and neck after 600 miles of racing."

Daley also offered a fishing report: "We are currently trolling for tuna and dorado. No hookups yet, but we've just started. We should be at the head of the fleet [Monday] morning for roll call which is right near the entrance to Mag Bay. So after roll call, we'll watch the whales mate in Mag Bay for a few hours before proceeding to Cabo San Lucas where we hope to spend the evening.

"The weather is perfect. No clouds, no rain, about 75 degrees with calm seas. Ocean is blue. No, I mean really, really blue. Doesn't get any better than this."

Better Days to Come In Puerto Vallarta Race

The race continues from Yachting Universe:

Beau Geste's navigator is Juan Vila, the Spaniard who charted Germany's illbruck to victory for skipper John Kostecki in the 2001-02 Volvo Ocean Race. In a pre-race assessment, Vila offered the wisdom that "it's quite challenging with the high coastlines on one side," before encountering the mysteries of the Gulf of California past Cabo San Lucas.

"Going to Cabo might be more important," Vila said. "We'll just take the latest forecast when we get there."

Honey said, "He's exactly right. He's one of the smartest guys around."

Meanwhile, the 11 Salsa Division boats were proceeding to Cabo San Lucas on the fishing leg of their four-part schedule where angling success temporarily replaces time in the competition.

Daily position reports
, including latitude and longitude, and standings are posted at www.dryc.org.

But, Of Course

From another blogger:

Melanie and I in Cabo San Lucas. This was our favorite stop along the way. We found this beach with our friends Brad & Christine. :-)

But, of course. This is the secluded beach at the Playa Grande. To the left and behind them is the resort (see the pictures here on my site) and directly behind them are the stone hills that lead you to the Cabo arch.

It Must Be Senor Greenberg's!

From Steve Harvey in the LA Times:

Food for thought: On a visit to Cabo San Lucas, Abe Feinberg of Northridge chanced upon a hybrid shop where you can pick up some lox and tortillas.

I am guessing that Steve is talking about Senor Greenberg's! When you are in Cabo, be sure to stop by. It is right near the marina and only a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Playa Grande.

Corum International Yacht Race Day 1

From Yachting Universe:

MARINA DEL REY, Calif.---The first of three Racing Divisions in Del Rey Yacht Club's 18th biennial Corum International Yacht Race to Puerto Vallarta got under way Wednesday with no clear early leader among three Santa Cruz 50s....

...Tactics among the racers starting Wednesday were closely guarded secrets. Wilson, a veteran offshore racer who has sailed more of this series than he claims he can count, said, "I just love this race. The club puts on the best race of anybody. I love [sailing to] mainland Mexico."

But he wouldn't reveal any secrets learned over the years, especially how he has dealt with the tricky winds in the Gulf of California beyond Cabo San Lucas.

Looks like a cool race to Cabo San Lucas. The whole story is a good one worth reading.

Baja Road Report Cabo San Lucas To Tijuana

From BajaInsider.com, we get a road trip. Here is an excerpt:

This past week I drove every inch of Baja’s Hwy 1, twice. The road is in very good shape. Without the impact of hurricanes this season, the road crews had a chance to get ahead of the game. There has been a lot of resurfacing of the Hwy from Cabo to Tijuana; some of it is on-going. There are a few bridges still under demolition and repair, but permanent by-passes have been constructed. The gentle rain that most of Baja received last month has made the trip beautiful. The desert is very green and many plants are still blooming. I enjoyed a moon rise on my southbound trip over the Boojum forest that was breathtaking.

A good synopsis of this long trip and some thoughts on Cabo San Lucas.

Corum International Yacht Race

From Yachting Universe:

The Salsas, introduced in 1995 as the "cruising" class in the oldest and longest race to mainland Mexico, have scheduled stops at Turtle Bay, Bahia Santa Maria and Cabo San Lucas. That fleet may motor in light wind but pays a time penalty for doing so. All used their motors at one time or another to reach Turtle Bay.

The lead boat, Bob and Kathy Patterson's J/46, Lark, from Los Angeles, was pounding hard when it encountered a dismasted 30-foot Lancer sailboat---not a race entrant---in the middle of the 23-mile-wide San Pedro Channel between Long Beach and Santa Catalina Island. A faulty forestay did in the Lancer. The owner, Chuck Astes of Sherman Oaks, was with his friend Bianca Barragon but in no immediate distress.

Whales Watching Us?

From Cleveland.com:

Were we watching the whales, or were they watching us?

That's the question I asked myself on each of the three occasions I saw them frolicking in their winter stomping grounds in the Pacific.

I don't agree with the conclusion of this article. There are plenty of ways to view the whales in Cabo in December and January -- from the shore, big boats, small boats -- take your pick. Whale-watching is a big deal in Cabo San Lucas.

But I published the link because whale watching is a lot of fun and something you should definitely enjoy when in Cabo!

The Cabo Wabo

This is a pretty cool story from Cabo San Lucas:

Unbeknownst to Rex, Jason had spent weeks sending emails and making phone calls to the Cabo Wabo, one of the premier live-music venues down in Cabo, owned by Sammy Hagar. Through sheer persistence, Jason arranged for us to play a set down at the Cabo Wabo, and Jason and I managed to check our guitars at the airport without Rex noticing. When we arrived at the airport in Cabo, Jason let Rex in on the secret as our guitars came into the baggage claim area. Rex had told Jason once upon a time that he would love to play a show at the Cabo Wabo, so Rex was in a happy state of shock when we told him we had a gig to play in a few short hours.

Of course, read the whole thing. Looks like a pretty good set list.

Tanning salons see spike in customers

From The Arkansas Traveler:

"The tanning season definitely begins right now in February," said Ali McIntosh, manager of A Classic Salon. "In January we had anywhere from 10 to 20 clients per day, but now we're having anywhere from 45 to 50 clients a day."

Major spring break destinations are beaches like Cancun, Cabo San Lucas and Florida, where the sun plays a major factor in vacation activities. Many students tan to shed their pale winter look and kick off spring with a more "outdoor" look.

"In general, most people are concerned about appearance. It can be assumed that people desire to be considered beautiful by others and to have more pleasant features. The stereotypical good-looking person is usually a thin female or muscularly built male with nice, clean hair and bronze or tan skin," according to a recent study from the psychology department of Vanderbilt University.

Many students turn to tanning beds to achieve that dark, bronzed look and to arrive at the beach with a base tan.

This isn't a recommendation, but definitely an interesting read.

Fast Times At Cabo High

From SFGate.com:

These days the spring break atmosphere in Cabo is hardly confined to those of college age, nor is it limited to spring. Grown-up money -- much of it from the Bay Area -- flows into the tip of Baja as freely as the liquor. Instead of cramming themselves into tiny cinderblock rooms like the student set, these older partiers loll at one of the burgeoning luxury resorts or private villas, swing their Callaways on a new world-class golf course and enjoy a gourmet dinner before heading out for a night of tequila shots and matrons-gone-wild at Cabo Wabo.

Oh...there's lots more!

Los Cabos, Mexico again site of May 15-21 world championship

From FishingWorld.com:

(Feb. 03, 2005 - CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO)... Nearly 60 teams from around the world have pre-registered for the Rolex/International Game Fish Association Offshore Championship Tournament, May 15- 21.

Even more teams, who have won from one of 110 qualifying tournaments held in 39 countries on six continents during 2004, are expected when the sixth annual world championship, a four-day catch-and-release billfish event begins.

"We’ve gotten letters, phone calls and e-mails from a number of winning teams from a half dozen countries indicating they’re planning to be competing in Cabo," said Lynda Wilson, Rolex/IGFA tournament coordinator. "The level of competition at those qualifying tournaments to win an entry into the Rolex/IGFA Offshore is intense."

Give Patriots super edge in experience

From IndyStar.com:

My goal is simple.

My goal is to look around and try to figure out why the Patriots are here, again, and the Indianapolis Colts are in Cabo San Lucas having their privacy invaded by the New York Post's Page Six writers.

I guess if you can't be in the Super Bowl, Cabo is probably the best next place to be!

Bringing the games

From Townline.com:

"Two years ago, I took myself and my two oldest boys [Paul, 17 at the time, and Dan, 12] went to Mexico," O'Neill said. "We went to Baja California. My sons were able to go into the school systems and see how they learned and how they spent their days in school, it was very educational for them."

O'Neill added that he also enjoyed splitting the trip between doing work for SWC and vacationing at Cabo San Lucas on the Baja California peninsula.

Oh, yes. Vacationing at Cabo San Lucas!

Valentines, don't despair

This is straight from the restaurant at your resort. Check out the left sidebar for the virtual tours and you can see the restaurant discussed here.

From The Olympian Online:

Valentine's Day calls for a recipe above the ordinary. Fortunately, I have just the ticket. From the southern-most point of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, comes a recipe that pairs sea bass with shrimp with a duo of luscious sauces.

Chef Hernan Cortez puts together a menu to please the varied tastes of the visitors and tourists who come to Cabo to unwind and renew. Meals meant to be appreciated are served in The Brigantine Restaurant, which commands an expansive view of the Pacific Ocean. The crash of thunderous waves is barely a few yards away. Diners are within sight of the famous rock arches of Land's End, where the dazzling Sea of Cortez dances with the Pacific.

It is a beatiful, expanse, and private view of the Pacific Ocean. You will love it!

Red Sky

From ThinkBlog:

As has now become our tradition, we spend the week between Christmas and New Years some place other than our home in San Francisco. It gives us a chance to recharge our batteries and get ready to roll for the year ahead.

This year, we made it to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for the first time. Cabo is located at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula - 1000 miles south of San Diego and 10 degrees south of the Tropic of Cancer (a little perspective – Portland, Oregon is 1000 miles north of San Diego!). The Pacific Ocean is to the West and the Sea of Cortez is to the East.

There's more good stuff on fishing and history in Cabo San Lucas. Be sure to check it out.

Travel Q & A

From MercuryNews.com:

Q. I'll be visiting Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and intend to rent a car. My credit card company has said it will provide me with collision coverage but not personal injury or liability. Is Mexican car rental insurance necessary?

Ken Silverman, Saratoga

A. Although car rental insurance is not required in Mexico, it's always a good idea. Just imagine sitting in a police station because you were involved in an accident and can't prove you're able to pay for any damage or injury you might have caused.

Good idea. Also a good idea to read the whole thing.

Majestic giants of oceans draw legions of followers

From FortWayne.com:

Whale watchers arrive in Baja on cruise ships and by buses, vans and planes, some flying into Loreto or Cabo San Lucas and driving north. Unlike on Maui, accommodations there are limited, and some tours include stays in tent cabins along the coast.

December is perfect whale watching season in Cabo. The Sea of Cortez is where you want to be. Just a five minute walk over the private skywalk and down to the marina gets you to the whales.
