Driving from desert to sea in Baja California

I inhaled sharply, startled by the curious splendor of the place.

We had entered a magical region of Baja California´s Desierto Central (Central Desert). It was a scenic payoff for the arduous miles we had driven on Route 1, the Transpeninsular Highway. It was one of many such payoffs during a four-day adventure on Baja´s mother road.

The journey took us through the heart of Mexico´s last frontera, a desolate region seen by few of the 24 million tourists who visit Baja annually to play or fish in the waters off Los Cabos or shop in the stores of Tijuana or Ensenada.

But the untamed interior of Baja offers unparalleled sights: The American Automobile Association guidebooks call it the "most fascinating desert scenery in North America."

This Christmas surprise keeps giving, years later...

So often, stories in the newspaper are tidy packages with logical beginnings and endings. But this story still hasn't ended, and it's at least 45 years old.

I shared the story in this column last month, just before Christmas. It was a perfect holiday story: Lake Oswego resident Barry Wright shared his memory of Christmas Eve in 1961, when he was a 17-year-old California teenager. That holiday season he joined his aunt Thyrza Pelling, who also lives in Lake Oswego today, and her two sons -- Barry's cousins Rodney and Trevor -- aboard Thyrza's schooner Destiny, on a trip down the coast of Baja.

On Christmas Eve they met a family on a small boat at a fishing pier in Cabo San Lucas. The man was the brother of actress Elizabeth Taylor; his name was Howard Taylor, and his wife was Mara. They told Barry and his family they were beginning a round-the-world sailing trip with their four children, who ranged in age from 8 to 11 months.

"While on the beach in Cabo..."

NEW YORK – Xavier Nady was lying on a beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, when his cell phone began to buzz.

"Welcome to the New York Mets," the voice on the other end told him.

Take a Vacation Like the Stars

Halperin said Mexican resort getaway Cabo San Lucas has also become a staple for the celebrity jet set.

“It was really the hot spot for the last two or three years and now the rest of the world has caught on. People are flocking by the droves.”

Among the reasons celebs like Jessica Simpson, Brad Pitt, John Travolta and Oprah Winfrey have all recently visited Cabo: it's very close to L.A., it wasn't hit by any hurricanes last year and it has plently of luxury resorts that cater to a star's every want and need.

Simpson chose the One & Only Pamilla, with its fully equipped spa and infinity pools.

But for the rest of us, another attractive part of Cabo is its range in prices.

“If you want to stay in the city, it’s much more affordable. And you can drive from California, so you can do it the budget way if you want to,” Halperin said. Even the pricey One & Only Pamilla offers some reasonable prices, she added.

Todos Santos: Artist's Colony

Weaving his way through a thorn forest of jumping chollas, cardon cactus and elephant trees, Sergio Jauregui paused when he reached a cliff-top view of the Pacific Ocean.

A group of humpback whales spouted and slapped the water with their tails as they swam south along the Baja California coast. The barks of sea lions echoed off the nearby cliffs, a rare place where lichens and moss can grow on cactus because of coastal fog...

...An hour's drive north of the vacation resort of Cabo San Lucas, Todos Santos is a budding arts community, not unlike Taos, N.M., of the 1960s.
